2009/2010 Board Members
President: John Kottcamp
For the last twenty years, John has been thinking strategically about customers; their experiences, relationships and the lifetime value they contribute to the brands with which they choose to engage. His passion is the intersection of marketing and technology. Currently, as Chief Marketing Strategist, John has helped grow Ascentium into a leading national experience company, recently recognized both as one of AdAge’s Top 50 Digital Agencies and simultaneously Microsoft’s Partner of the Year in 2008. Prior to joining Ascentium, John has held executive positions with McCann Worldgroup, Gateway, T-Mobile USA and Lufthansa. He is a frequent speaker on Closed Loop Marketing and customer experience, respected blogger atwww.thecollaborativemarketer.com , VP of the Seattle Direct Marketing Organization and a member of the Forrester Research Technology Marketing Executive Council. John earned his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and prior to settling in Seattle, has made his home in such diverse places as Munich, Madrid, Miami, San Francisco and San Diego.
Past President : Sue Engdahl
Sue is an Account Executive for ColorGraphics, A Cenveo Company, the largest printing, mailing and fulfillment company on the West Coast. Sue uses her years of experience to partner with her clients in producing a quality product that delivers consistently and accurately on time. She “gets things done” with enthusiasm and energy. Last year, Sue was Vice President of the SDMA. This is her 3rd year on the SDMA board, making her one of the most senior board members. In May, Sue and her husband went to South Africa and Zambia on a photo safari. In her free time, Sue enjoys biking, sea kayaking and gardening in West Seattle.
Secretary: Emily Kegel
Emily is a Wisconsin transplant who moved to Seattle with mountains on her mind. She is moving them with TRC Staffing as their only Recruiter. She recruits for a variety of fields and positions. She has been with TRC for a short while but has been in the staffing industry for the past year and a half. Her previous experience as a Manager for REI has prepared her for finding the right person for any job. Emily joined the SDMA hoping to meet new people and learn about an industry different than her own. This is her first year on the SDMA Board and she is excited to help make an impact. In her spare time she is cycling, skiing, climbing or eating lots of cheese!
Treasurer: Bill Nieman
Bill Nieman comes to us from McCallum Print Group, one of the Northwest’s premiere printing plants, specializing in direct mail, fulfillment and collateral production. Along with The Mailhandlers, McCallum is a founding member of the SDMA and supplies their printed promotions monthly. Bill has been a salesperson there for ten years, and enjoys combining his love for the hardware with helping his customers. Besides handling the SDMA’s financial business, Bill enjoys boating and the outdoors with this family.
Marketing Chair: Jay Wergin
Jay's first job after graduating Art School at the Art Institute of Seattle in '91 was with Nintendo. He worked there for 5 years and took Nintendo Power Magazine into the digital age of Computer to Plate printing. When the Dot Com World was booming, Jay was drawn towards another Seattle based company, Amazon.com, and was recruited to work as a Brand Marketing Creative Manager. There he developed a small team of on-staff designers, coordinators and writers as well as a community of freelancer illustrators, photographers and designers and began offering Amazon print promotional collateral and advertising media. Then a chance to work on a publication presented itself again when Jay was hired by Virtuoso to work on Virtuoso Life Magazine. At Virtuoso he continues pushing the limits of computer-based publishing, personalization techniques, and look at innovated ways of marketing and communicating to our readers. Outside of work, Jay has a beautiful family with 2 kids, Leo (12yrs) and Marcella (14yrs) and wife Jennifer. They have lived in Seattle long enough to be considered natives and enjoy the great things the Northwest has to offer, including golf, alpine skiing, camping and mt. biking.
Sponsorships Chair: Jennifer Moser
Jen is a marketing associate at WhatCounts, Inc. – a permission-based email marketing firm. There, Jen is working hard to establish herself in the industry. Jen started volunteering for the SDMA in November 2007, and she is already making strides in finding new sponsors. She is a recent Cum Laude graduate from University of California, Irvine where she played Division I volleyball for the Anteaters. Currently, Jen resides in Tacoma, where she is also a club volleyball coach for an 18’s girls’ team. Jen is also an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast.
Membership Chair: Nate Luce
Nate heads up the direct marketing program for PEMCO Insurance, a Northwest company that has provided auto, home, and life insurance for nearly 60 years. He has marketed insurance products and services for nearly a decade. Nate is a long-time member of the SDMA and is looking forward to serving on the Board. A Seattle native, he holds an MBA from Seattle Pacific University and a B.A. from the University of Washington.
Vice President: Michelle Lanham
Michelle has worked in mar-comm, both in-house and agency, in the Seattle area for nine years. As a certified project manager, she has enthusiastically managed campaigns for a variety of B2B and B2C organizations including AT & T Media, Pacific Medical Centers, Children’s Hospital and Eddie Bauer. Her work includes campaigns in online, direct mail, print, broadcast, branding, events and corporate communications. She served as Web Tsar for the SDMA, 2008-2009.
Market to the Max Chair: Brian Ratzliff
Brian is a co-founder of WhatCounts, Inc. - a permission-based email marketing firm - where he leads the marketing and business development functions. For over ten years he has been building brands, forging strategic relationships, and driving revenue for Internet pioneers, such as ShareBuilder Corporation -which became the second fastest growing online brokerage in 2000- and Starwave Corporation where he was on the marketing and business development teams responsible for ESPN.com, NBA.com, NASCAR Online, and for a time, NFL.com. He holds an MBA from the Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, Canada and a BA from Trinity Western University in Vancouver, Canada.
Hospitality/Registration Chair: Melissa Payo
Melissa Payo is with WhatCounts, a permission-based email marketing firm, as an Account Manager. Melissa holds a BA in Communication from the University of Washington. She is bringing her diverse experience from fundraising and marketing as well as other volunteer experiences for local non-profit organizations to the SDMA. This is Melissa's third season as a member of the SDMA. Her involvement has included managing event registration and membership. She is looking forward to finding fun and exciting venues for the SDMA. Melissa loves a good book and loves Seattle's diverse outdoor recreations from Greenlake's trail to kayaking along Lake Union, camping, a good ball game to attending book readings at Elliott Bay Bookstore.
National Liason Chair: Matthew Knuth
Matthew Knuth works for IWCO Direct, a company that specializes in targeted lead generation, loyalty and automated marketing programs for leading direct marketers throughout the country. We focus on driving increased response and marketing efficiency through our turnkey solutions supporting the automation of marketing communications. IWCO Direct's "Total Package Solution" includes format design, web/sheet printing, 4 color variable printing, plastic/paper cards, litho/flexo envelope printing and converting, lettershop, commingling and postal logistics all in-house. IWCO Direct is unique due to our size, breadth of expertise and capabilities from the conceptualization to execution of programs.
Events Chair: Blake Cahill
SVP Marketing for Visible Technologies, Blake has over 16 years of executive management experience leading marketing, sales, product management, and customer support organizations domestically and internationally in a variety of technology, consumer, and telecom companies including SafeHarbor Technology Corporation, AT&T, Belgacom, Qwest, SBC, and ServiceMaster.com. Blake holds bachelor's degrees in political science, history, and business from Salve Regina University.
Web Tsar: Beth Pascarella
Beth has over 15 years of experience in marketing and advertising. Companies count on her to get projects done on time, on budget and with the correct message. To make that happen, she has found humor and saying "Thank You" are very powerful tools. This is her first year on the SDMA Board, but previously served as the Program Chair and President of the Tacoma Ad Club.
Social Media Chair: Lisa Brannon
.jpg) Lisa has marketing in her blood. Her father started PMA Direct Marketing in 1983 & she has worked her way up from the bottom. Before taking over the family business Lisa spent the last 7 years marketing herself as a successful real estate broker. Now, as President & Owner of PMA Lisa works directly with the staff & clients to produce direct marketing campaigns of all sizes. She is enthusiastic about giving the SDMA a presence in the social media arena.
